Table to Greens

We were delighted recently to see the two-page spread in the Brandon Sun about the outstanding environmental management strategy being used by the Clear Lake Golf Course.

Involving their restaurant, the use of bio-diesel, recycling, smart bio-degradable take-out containers, and a long-term approach to composting, and turning the waste stream into a resource stream is all part of their leading edge management program. We were proud to nominate Greg Holden as part of the Clear Lake Golf Course management team for a 2009 Manitoba Eco-Network award, which he won.

Earth Rhythms features Greg in some unique experiences that we customize for small groups. Learning about composting, use of non-toxic disease-combating agents like neem and tea tree oils, garlic extract and vinegars and how effective they are in helping to make the Clear Lake Golf Coursean 85% organic course is part of the experience.  As we travel by electric golf cart, we are likely to experience some other unique aspects of the culture and natural history of this marvelous place.  Call Earth Rhythms and ask about our customized experiences for small groups.

Traveling low carbon with Earth Rhythms

Saskatchewan travel writer Christalee Froese traveled into the backcountry of Riding Mountain with our head guide Buzz Crowston, to experience mountain biking and to learn about the history of the German POW camp that existed in the park between 1943 - 45.  Invited by Travel Manitoba, Christalee was enthusiastic about the experience and about how special this park is.  We look forward to seeing her published article in CAA's Westworld magazine.  Thanks for coming Christalee!

Hidden Gem In Our Own Backyard

Neepawa Banner feature on Earth Rhythms:  We recently had the opportunity to host Stephanie Lisoway, a staff writer for the Neepawa Banner in the town closely associated with the Lily Festival and the birthplace of Margaret Laurence, a well-respected Canadian literary figure. 

Stephanie was interested in reviewing the kind of programming that we provided, and helping her readers to better understand the kinds of nature-based tourism that exists within their backyard.  As Stephanie and I discussed how best to give her "a taste of Riding Mountain nature", it occurred to me that maybe she could accompany me as I did some research for an upcoming family group that had booked a photo and wildlife safari with me. 

Her article spilled out of that morning's experience - we headed out around 6 am, and had a great set of experiences.  You can read the article Clear Lake Adventures 2009, and watch a short video about some of the wildlife that we saw that day.

Town aims to inspire tourism push

It seems that a number of different rural communities across Canada are beginning to realize that the real magic in providing tourism in their communities lies in their backyards. I wonder if it is the current economic reality that is causing this "pause to reflect", or whether this is part of a global movement to discover more meaningful travel. I've been invited to speak to the Town of Morden on May 7th.  Morden was designated a cultural capital of Canada in 2008.  For a short video about Morden, take a look at this.

The Morden Times has published a short article about what they are hoping to achieve by having me as a guest speaker.  I look forward to being in Morden, known for among many things in Manitoba, as the home of the Morden Corn and Apple Festival, occuring this year from August 21 - 23, 2009.
